This patient is my brother-in-law. I had liposuctioned his chin about 12-14 years ago and he received a good result, but he desired an improvement in his appearance, so his wife came to me with the request that we improve him by placing a chin implant At the time of the surgery, the patient had local anesthetic injected into the chin area and relaxation medicine enough so he would not remember the procedure. After this, a 1-cm (less than 1/2 inch) incision was made underneath his chin and a space was made right on the front of the patient’s jaw bone (mandible) and down the sides of the mandible as well. Into the space was placed an extra-large chin implant, which projects or gives a forward push of about 3/4 of a centimeter and wraps smoothly around the front of the jaw to create a nice lower chin. After an initial recovery of a few weeks, the patient started noticing something. He said that women would talk into him spontaneously and this had not happened before. In any case, he did very well for 4 months and was very pleased with his chin implant; however, he went on a vacation to the tropics and had an infection of his foot and the infection went to his chin implant, and the chin implant had to be removed for a few months. The infection cleared and he is now scheduled to put the chin implant back in. Note that with any artificial implant, such as breast implants, chin implants, heart valve implants or knee implants, it is probably advisable to take antibiotics prior to a dental procedure because the procedure can cause bacteria to go in the bloodstream and sometimes, they can go to the “foreign body”, in this place the chin implant.
