Before   Approximately one month after Fleur-de-lis Abdominoplasty

This lady had about a 70-pound weight loss after stomach-stapling surgery. She had a great deal of loose skin of her front of her abdomen and her sides that she very much wanted to be rid of. The procedure chosen was a tummy tuck or abdominoplasty, performed in our Pasadena surgical center for this Los Angeles-based woman. This particular tummy tuck involved using an incision that already existed up the middle of her abdomen in order to tighten the skin, as well as using an incision at the bottom of her abdomen to pull the skin down as well. A new bellybutton was created. This particular type of pattern is called the fleur-de-lis tummy tuck. Note that these photographs were taken within 3 weeks of the procedure, and although the patient is very pleased with the tightness of the skin, she still has some quite visible scarring, which we are treating with injection therapy of cortisone. This scarring will lighten with time.

During the abdominoplasty, a trans-umbilical breast augmentation (TUBA) was performed also. The implants are sized to match her body and the result is excellent.

Her internal muscle underneath the skin was stitched tightly as well, so not only is the skin tightened at the waist in a way that is very pleasing for the patient, but the muscle underneath has been tightened. This muscle has often been stretched after pregnancy or weight gain. But it can be more or less permanently repaired by sewing it in the middle of the abdomen. “Permanent” stitches are used. Scientific studies with CT scans of this muscle area in abdominoplasty patients like this person show that stitching the muscle in this fashion generally produces lasting improvement.

This patient did have some discomfort, as is typical with a tummy tuck. For several weeks, she felt better with her torso slightly flexed and had a little trouble standing up straight, but as time went on, she found that she had a very flat abdomen and her pain gradually went away, as is typical.
