This patient had a diseased greater saphenous vein of the left leg. This individual had swelling and pain in addition just the unslightly vein. The valves were not working properly. Treatment for the case included local anesthetic and then placement of a catheter into the vein after which a laser fiber was threaded up the vein from the knee to the groin area, were the vein goes into the deeper system. With local anesthetic providing comfort, the laser was activated and slowly withdrawn from the vein, obliterating the vein on the way out. The patient was then immediately put in compression stockings that went all the way up to the groin area and was able to walk and leave the office immediately. The only side effect was a little tenderness in the area that was worked on. After a few weeks of injecting little areas of remaining vein with sclerosing solution, this patient was symptom-free and did not have to wear compression stockings anymore.
