This patient had a diseased and damaged greater saphenous vein of his right leg, which is the vein which extends from the groin all the way to the ankle. He was treated with a special laser that has a long fiber, which is inserted at the knee all the way to the groin. After activation of the laser, it is slowly withdrawn and the vein is destroyed from the inside out. In follow-up, this gentleman required several weeks of injection with special solution that further damages the inside of the vein and completes the process of getting rid of this diseased vein. Note that the body has many, many thousands of veins on the legs and that getting rid of bad veins has no harmful effect on the circulation. Also, the diseased veins are not useful for future heart bypass surgeries because they are too big for this. This patient’s pain and swelling of his leg went away completely after the treatment and he has had no recurrence of the problem after more than a year. Notice in the inner part of the leg above the knee, he has a bit of pigmentary problems remaining. This is a common post-treatment result, and this should go away over the next few months in all likelihood.
