Los Angeles Cosmetic Surgeon Offers Customized Recovery for Laser Skin Renewal

Women and men interested in eradicating wrinkles and improving facial skin health used to have to choose from laser treatments with set intensities and recovery times. Los Angeles cosmetic surgeon Dr. Robert Yoho now offers adaptable recovery times for laser resurfacing using the SmartXIDE™ Dot treatment system.

Los Angeles, California (November 2008) - Laser technologies have provided some of the most effective skin treatments available today, but until now it was difficult to customize the laser intensity and recovery time following treatments. Dr. Robert Yoho, a Los Angeles cosmetic surgeon, explains how the new SmartXIDE™ Dot system incorporates the most effective features of popular laser treatments while permitting patients to choose from a full spectrum of intensities, with corresponding recovery times.

"Like standard CO2 laser treatments," Dr. Yoho explains, "SmartXIDE can be highly effective for static wrinkles, sagging, skin texture changes, and pigmentation problems that result from aging processes and sun damage. Unlike other options, though, this laser lets us control the intensity of the treatment. This allows for customized treatments and helps prevent problems with overexposure."

CO2 laser treatments are a particularly effective alternative to face lift for the sagging skin and static wrinkles that typically appear for many people when they're in their early to mid 30s, especially around the mouth and eyes. However, standard treatments tend to have fixed intensities, and may be excessive for Los Angeles cosmetic surgery patients who are just looking for a touch-up, or anyone who would prefer a lower-intensity treatment with a faster recovery period.

"Typical skin resurfacing treatments will apply laser heat evenly to the entire surface of the treatment area," Dr. Yoho says. "This effectively destroys dead skin cells and prompts the body to regenerate the skin from the inside out for a firmer, more even look. At the same time, though, for Los Angeles cosmetic surgery patients with only limited wrinkling and largely healthy skin, this level of treatment may be excessive."

SmartXIDE, unlike typical CO2 treatments, focuses laser energy on isolated points of the skin. This dot-matrix treatment pattern prompts the skin to produce new collagen without requiring the entire skin surface to replace itself. Dr. Yoho has found that by preserving more skin, he can minimize the lengthy recovery times and unexpected texture changes that can result from other laser treatments.

Other non-CO2 fractional laser treatments exist, but tend to allow more thermal energy to be absorbed by water content in the skin, instead of by the deeper skin tissues they are supposed to correct. While SmartXIDE has the advantage of the dot-matrix approach, Dr. Yoho explains, "The energy is still focused where it needs to be."

Because the laser's intensity can be adjusted to fit such a broad range of goals, some doctors also see the approach as a faster and more precise substitute for other resurfacing treatments, such as the traditional chemical peel.

"For all intensities of treatment, patients will still experience some level of redness and tenderness after their procedure," Dr. Yoho notes. "The amount will depend on your treatment choices and on your skin type. Typically, my patients are back to normal activities within 48 hours or less."
