How The Doctor Chooses the Right Breast Implant For You

Breast ImplantChoice of breast implant is critical: they are not all the same and your breasts are different from other women’s. We have to make a critical decision about the width of the implant by estimating the woman’s chest size. Bigger chest sizes will not get proper cleavage without an implant that is wide enough. On the other hand, small chest sizes do best with a smaller diameter implant that can project a little higher if larger breasts are desired. An advantage of these smaller-width implants is that they “ripple” or show the implant shell very little compared to other saline implants. What our patients generally want to avoid is a breast that hangs out to the side in an unnatural fashion. And they want breasts that are close enough together in the middle to have good cleavage.

The “teardrop” implants sag from the very first, and we rarely recommend them. Most women are trying to fill out the top part of their breasts and the teardrop implants do not do this well. The two breast implant manufacturers make implants that have different characteristics, so if a breast surgeon says he uses only one of these manufacturers, he may not be making the best choices for each and every patient.

What about size? This is a very individual decision and we spend a lot of time trying on “sizer” implants in order to figure out just what each woman wants. Judy works with every one of our patients to make the best choice for them. Just remember a few things. First, try not to get hung up on the exact volume or cup size: it’s the look that matters. Second, wear the sizers and sizer bra with the clothing you will be using most with your new breasts. If it is a swimsuit that matters, be sure and try on a swimsuit. Third, we have to make the real implant just a little bigger because it seems a little flatter and smaller when it is put under the muscle in the pocket that the doctor makes for the implants. And fourth, remember that you will understand better what the size means to you after the implants have been in place for a few months. Let us guide you a bit about what would look best based on our judgment about your particular needs. We have counseled many, many people in your position.
